LMS 3.0

November 4, 2009

In a thoughtful commentary published in Inside Higher Ed earlier this year, my friend and colleague Lev Gonick, vice president and CIO at Case Western Reserve University, proclaimed that “course management systems are dead; long live course management systems.” This was one of his eleven IT predictions for 2009.

At a time when the Course or Learning Management System (LMS) has become an embedded, if not indeed an essential, element of the college experience for students across all sectors of American higher education, Gonick’s proclamation seemed, at face value, contrarian. But Lev focused his assessment primarily on the fate of proprietary systems (read Angel, Blackboard, and Desire2Learn):

New Blackboard Tool Connects With Google’s Free Services

November 2, 2009

A new Blackboard tool lets campuses connect the company’s course-management system to Google’s free e-mail and document-sharing services.

The connecting tool, which was developed by Northwestern University, is now available to other campuses as a “Building Block” plug-in for Blackboard. It allows students to access Google Apps within the Blackboard platform, meaning they don’t have to sign into the two platforms separately.

Hundreds of colleges have signed up for Google’s free services and made the company’s Gmail service the official student e-mail program on their campuses. Google’s services include a series of online programs as well, including a word processor and a spreadsheet application, and some students are using them for their classwork.

Extensions(TM) Web site at http://blackboard.com/Support/Extensions.aspx.

Seven Tips for an Easy and Effective LMS Switch | Upside Learning Blog

October 27, 2009

For an eLearning initiative to be successful, strong leaders and champions are needed in the organization. It also needs a robust and reliable LMS solution amongst others great courses, proper alignment of the training function with the LMS, technical support for the entire setup, etc. The LMS remains a key link in the success chain. Is it any wonder that selecting the right LMS is not easy? I’d written a few posts on how to decide between hosted and behind-the-firewall option, what typical things training companies look in an LMS for, and a recent one on five things not to do while selecting an LMS. These posts were focused around making your LMS purchase easier, smoother and giving a positive return on the time invested in the process. These posts remain pertinent regardless of whether it’s your first LMS purchase or it’s a switch-over to a new LMS as they dwell on some basic, underlying principles. However, in this post I am trying to stress on specific concerns to take care of while ‘switching an LMS’. Why? Read on.

After Latest Loss in Patent Case, Blackboard Looks to the Supreme Court

October 20, 2009

Blackboard Inc. plans to ask the Supreme Court to review its patent battle with its rival Desire2Learn after a federal appeals court last week denied the company's request to have a larger panel of the court reconsider the case.

The company will soon file its request for consideration by the nation's highest court, said Matthew Small, Blackboard's general counsel, in an interview Monday, though he acknowledged that “it is very unlikely that any case is ever heard by the Supreme Court.”

Not Your Parents’ ‘Course Content Delivery’

September 3, 2009

The phrase “course content delivery” is familiar to us all, but its usage could stand some updating. In fact, we may be due for a millenial change in our perceptions of learning design as current technology tools offer opportunities to change teaching and learning models.
